The theory test is made up of two parts, the multiple choice question and answer part and the video based hazard perception test. You need to pass both parts or you will fail the test overall. There are 50 questions and you need to score 43 or more to pass. You have 57 minutes in which to complete the test, this is usually plenty of time.
The hazard perception test consists of fourteen video clips which contain a developing hazard, apart from one video clip which contains two developing hazards. The pass mark is 44 out of 75 possible points, higher scores being achieved by responding to the developing hazard in good time.
My advice as to how to approach this test is that it does require some homework, many questions will require common sense answers but this is unlikely to achieve the pass mark. I can recommend books and even better, some software training aids which will help with learning the answers to the questions. Similarly, the hazard perception test requires some preparation. I feel that these two areas, the questions and answers and the hazard perception are best learnt alongside the practical driving experience, so please do not wait to try and pass this test before starting to learn to drive.
You will need to pass the theory test before a practical test can be booked and a theory pass is valid for a period of two years.
